Top Tips for Protecting Yourself from the Sun

The sun’s rays feel great, but they are not great for your skin. Though the effects of staying out too long in the sun don’t appear right away, in the long run they can give you wrinkles and age spots — and possibly even skin cancer.

Dangers of Too Much Sun

Over time, the ultraviolet rays of the sun damage fibers in the skin known as elastin. When elastin breaks down, the surface tension of the skin can collapse, causing the skin to sag and stretch. Sun-damaged skin also tears and bruises more easily, and takes longer to heal than healthy skin.

Spending too much time in the sun also can cause freckles, rough texture, white spots and yellowing to appear on the skin. Discolored areas of the skin caused by the sun is known as “mottled pigmentation”, which can widen the small blood vessels located just beneath your skin.

Ways to Protect Your Skin

Everybody loves to spend time outdoors, but taking steps to protect yourself against the long-term effects of sun exposure is essential for your health. Here are some  tips for enjoying the sun while protecting your skin at the same time:

  • Wear Sunscreen — You should wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) or at least 30 in all weather and in every season. Look for one labeled “broad-spectrum” because that protects you from both the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
  • Sunglasses — Wear sunglasses that provide total UV protection
  • Clothing — Wear wide-brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Limit Exposure — Try to stay out of the sun when it is brightest, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Conduct Regular Self-Checks — Check your skin regularly for any changes or new growths. If you find any, get them checked out right away with a dermatologist.

The Best Protection

The best way to enjoy the sun and protect yourself at the same time is to install a patio cover on your home. A patio cover allows you to spend all the time you want outdoors without ever having to worry about the harmful damage of direct sunlight on your skin.

Patio covers allow you to have the best of both worlds!
